The process of recording interviews was seen as just as important - if not more important- than the audio product. It was essential that residents directed what they would like to talk about and were actively involved in the different stages of the project.
A particularly rewarding aspect of the project was hearing the interplay between residents and staff members' stories. Ree - a Registered Nurse who also staffs the 'beauty parlour' was unmatched for her enthusiasm for residents' stories, arranging to listen to the participants' CD recordings. The wonderful energy that's sustained by such talking and listening was often palpable as I walked past residents' having their hair cut, shampooed, coiffed or pampered - as stories unfolded like long lost locks, and the years were suddenly washed away...
